Nurturing children in need
Since 2007, more than 700 children have benefited from the Octopus Kids' Nurturing Programme.

Following the success of the Octopus Kids' Nurturing Programme in 2007, Octopus once again teamed up with St. James' Settlement to benefit underprivileged children through participation in extracurricular activities designed to broaden their horizons.

Octopus increased its funding this year, doubling the number of children able to take part to 200. The programme also expanded its reach from Tin Shui Wai and Yuen Long to Tuen Mun, Sheung Shui, Shum Shui Po and Chai Wan. Participants could choose from seven extracurricular activities - rope skipping, Chinese kung-fu, Chinese musical instruments, acrobatics, African drums, English drama and Chinese painting. Octopus staff will continue to support the programme by volunteering to supervise various activities.

In the kick-off ceremony in May, 200 school children from eight participating schools pledged to make the most of this learning opportunity. A graduate from 2007 told the 2008 group how she had benefited from the programme. The attendees were given a talk on how to manage their money. To give them a chance to practise what they had been taught, each one was given an Octopus wristband with a stored value of HK$100. They were encouraged to plan and manage their spending.
The 2008 Octopus Kids' Nurturing Programme received matching support from the Partnership Fund for the Disadvantaged of the Social Welfare Department, allowing more children to take part in the programme.
